Well, I have finally made it to Istanbul, and have spent the last day and a half trying to figure out what exactly is going on. I made it to the airport on time, but some of the other students coming in at the end of the day were delayed, so I ended up staying with Caner, the program assistant, and another girl at the airport for an extra two hours. By the time I made it to the Superdorm, where I'm staying, the rest of the group was leaving for dinner. By the time we made it, everyone else was done. Oh well- I have plenty more time to eat Turkish food and make friends.
Today we met our Professor/Program coordinator Kara on campus and did some pre-registration paperwork. After that, we had the day to ourselves. Bogazici University is located on a hill overlooking the Bosporus, and because it snowed here last night, the view was fantastic. I have yet to make it in the city center yet (Bogazici is in a suburb 20 mins from Taksim Square) but so far Turkey has been pretty mundane. I went to the supermarket (no toilet paper in the room), got a travel adapter, and a Turkish cell phone, which I should be able to activate soon. Tomorrow, we have a Turkish class from noon-2ish, then exchange student orientation at Bagazici with all the other foreign students. Follwoing that, we have a dinner sponsored by the university to meet the other exchange students. On Thursday, we leave fore a week-long trip to Cappadocia and the Aegean coast. I'm excited to visit Ephesus, Pergamon, Troy, and other less classical sites. More on that to follow.
So far, I have met only one of my suite-mates, and I'm not sure if there are any others even here. I should have 3, but I guess I'll find out soon enough. The fridge is mostly full and the kitchen counter/sink is dirty so people must be here. I'll try not to annoy my suitemates too much about cleaning. Anyway, glad to hear the Saints won the superbowl, and I hope all is well with everyone back home.
